Old Florida Style

Anna Maria Island is about two and a half hours from Orlando and around an hour from Tampa. This barrier island is an effortless travel destination for those looking for an escape with family and friends.
Anna Maria, a popular destination since the 1970’s, is one of the coziest paradises in Florida. It is one of the few areas that have successfully withstood major commercial development and allows the Florida of the past to return to life with old-fashioned fishing piers, local shops, and natural wildlife.

Island History

Anna Maria was first settled in the beginning of the twentieth century by Madison Post who then named the island for his wife Maria and his sister-in-law Anna. In 1892, George Emerson Bean became the first permanent resident on the Island, homesteading much of what is now the City of Anna Maria.
The first bridge that was built to connect Anna Maria Island to mainland Florida began construction in the summer of 1921. It crossed the bay to what now is Bridge Street in Bradenton Beach to the fishing town of Cortez.

Unique Blend of Sun and Fun

There are countless ways to enjoy all that Anna Maria Island has to offer, from adventures on the beach to oceanfront dining, but strolling through the streets of the island is quite an adventure all its own exploring the locally owned shops. The island-wide speed limit never tops 35 mph, so bicyclists sometimes move at too fast a pace. Any vacation to Anna Maria Island will leave you refreshed and wanting to return.
